adidas Grand Prix 2012
News and Notes, Volume 11

A Word from Rudisha
David RudishaDavid Rudisha is only 23, but as 2011 World Champion and World Record-holder, he's already an 800-meter veteran. At Friday's press conference, he was asked if he had any advice for American Robby Andrews, the New Jersey high school star who is making his major professional debut at Saturday's adidas Grand Prix. "As a young athlete, there are things you cannot force," he said. "It's just like building a house. You cannot start from the top; you start from the bottom, from the foundation building up."

Hurdle Talk
The men's 110-meter hurdles may be the hottest event in the sport right now, and three of the best—Jason Richardson, David Oliver and Aries Merritt—will line up on Saturday at Icahn Stadium. They got together at the press conference on Friday, but if you're waiting to hear some smack, you've got the wrong event. These guys have enough to worry about with the hurdles in their way; they don't need to create any more problems.

Role Model
Sprinter Kelly-Ann Baptiste may be shy, but she very much wants to be the kind of athlete that women in Trinidad and Tobago can look up to, the way Jamaicans can look up to Merlene Ottey and Veronica Campbell-Brown. See what the 2011 IAAF World Championships bronze medalist at 100 meters has to say about it here, in the final installment of the adidas Grand Prix/Milesplit series.

"Blade Runner" Watching the Forecast
The clock is ticking on the Olympic dream of Oscar Pistorius. Will Saturday be the day it all comes together for a 45.30 or faster, as required by the South African federation between now and June 30 to earn a spot on the team? "I ran well here last year in the rain," said the four-time Paralympic gold medalist who is chasing history. "If we have good weather, I'd like to run quick again.''

Tiru's Return
At the adidas Grand Prix, Tirunesh Dibaba will race at 5000 meters for the first time in two years. She hopes it will be enough to get her named to Ethiopia's Olympic team so that she can defend her gold medal at the distance. A hero in her country—hundreds of thousands lined the streets of Addis Ababa for her wedding procession—the "Baby Faced Destroyer" is likely to bring out the Ethiopian fans to Randall's Island, too. Read about Tiru's comeback here.

Flower Power
As Usain Bolt proved Thursday at the Bislett Games in Oslo, the excitement doesn't always end at the finish line. We at the adidas Grand Prix are sending this link out to all of the flower girls who will be on our track on Saturday, as a cautionary tale because we've got some big, fast guys, too. Although come to think of it, this young lady doesn't look too upset.

Ticket to speed
OK, so first the $75 tickets sold out, and now the $35 ones are gone, too. What are you waiting for? You think dozens of Olympic gold medalists and World Champions are going to hang around until you make up your mind? The curtain goes up at 1 p.m. Saturday. Yohan Blake will be waiting for you. But not for long. For, like, less than 10 seconds. So don't dawdle. Click here for tickets and let the show begin.
