MARY WITTENBERG INVITES EVERYONE UNDER
“THE BIG TENT” IN THIS WEEK’S “THE INSIDE TRACK” GUEST COLUMN

Wittenberg encourages event organizers to join forces to
create a broader platform

NEW YORK (May 27, 2010) — New York Road Runners president and CEO Mary Wittenberg discusses the merits of running and track & field event organizers joining forces in today’s “The Inside Track” guest column. “The Inside Track” is a six-part guest columnist series that will serve as a prelude to the adidas Grand Prix on Saturday, June 12, at Icahn Stadium in New York City.

Wittenberg uses the idea of “The Big Tent” to explain the benefits of organizations within the sport coming together: “It’s a concept we often hear in the context of politics of gathering and embracing many different points of view and constituencies under one umbrella to pursue shared goals. It’s a philosophy and a strategy that should also be embraced by the running industry.”

Wittenberg explains how a partnership between NYRR and Global Athletics & Marketing further demonstrates this concept: “Saturday, June 12, in New York City is a perfect example of the Big Tent philosophy at work. At NYRR, we are proud and excited to be part of a huge day of running in New York City that is sure to please running enthusiasts and generate considerable national and global media interest.”

Eighteen Global Champions, Four Diamond League Ambassadors Added To adidas Grand Prix Athlete Field

EIGHTEEN GLOBAL CHAMPIONS, FOUR DIAMOND LEAGUE AMBASSADORS ADDED TO ADIDAS GRAND PRIX ATHLETE FIELD

Veronica Campbell-Brown, Allyson Felix to headline
women’s 200 meters on June 12

NEW YORK (May 12, 2010) — Recently crowned world indoor champion Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica and American sprinter Allyson Felix are among the 18 Olympic and World champions and four IAAF Diamond League ambassadors added to the lineup of athletes slated to compete at the adidas Grand Prix on Saturday, June 12, organizers announced Wednesday. The adidas Grand Prix, held at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island, will be the fifth stop on the inaugural 14-meet, international Diamond League circuit.

In addition to Felix in the women’s 200 meters, other Diamond League ambassadors added to the field include Norway’s Andreas Thorkildsen and Finland’s Tero Pitkämäki in the men’s javelin and Valerie Vili of New Zealand in the women’s shot put. The other two ambassadors already announced for the New York meeting are Jamaican sprint sensation Usain Bolt and Australian pole vault king Steve Hooker. A total of 32 Olympians from 16 different countries have been announced.

Campbell-Brown and Felix will meet at 200m for the first time on U.S. soil. The two have raced eight times at the distance with Felix holding the 6-2 advantage. However, both of Campbell-Brown’s victories came in Olympic finals.

“New York is one of those cities you just love to compete in; after all, it is the ‘world capital,’” Campbell-Brown said. “I especially love the world-renowned Jamaican track fans that are always in attendance.”

Campbell-Brown, 27, made headlines recently with her victory in the women’s 60m dash at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Doha in early March. It was her first World Indoor title and her first major championship title since earning gold at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Campbell-Brown is a four-time Olympic medalist—including two individual golds in the 200m—and a seven-time World Championship medalist.

Felix, 24, of Santa Clarita, Calif., won Olympic gold in 2008 in the 4x400m and is a two-time Olympic 200m silver medalist. She is the reigning three-time World champion at 200m. One of 14 official IAAF Diamond League ambassadors, Felix will open her Diamond League season in Doha on May 14.

Also lining up for the women’s 200m are Americans Carmelita Jeter and Marshevet Myers (née Hooker). Jeter, 30, of Gardena, Calif., is known for her prowess at 100m distance as the reigning two-time World Outdoor Championship bronze medalist and as the second-fastest woman ever over 100m (10.64 seconds). She last raced at 200m in May 2009. Myers, 25, of Grand Prairie, Texas, was a 2008 Olympic finalist at 200m.

Intriguing match-ups are expected for each event in this year’s edition of the adidas Grand Prix:

The men’s javelin will pit Thorkildsen vs. Pitkämäki—two-time Olympic champion and 2009 World champion vs. Olympic bronze medalist and 2007 World champion—as both compete for the first time in the United States. Thorkildsen, 28, has established himself as one of the most accomplished javelin throwers in history, while Pitkämäki, 27, has proved himself a worthy competitor. The two will first go head-to-head in Diamond League competition in Oslo on June 4.

Olympic silver medalist Richard Thompson, 24, of Trinidad and Tobago, will face off against Bolt, the reigning Olympic champion and world record holder, and his previously announced Caribbean training partners Yohan Blake (JAM) and Daniel Bailey (ANT) in the 100m, the marquee men’s event. Thompson, who competed for Louisiana State University, was the 2008 NCAA 100m champion.

In the men’s 1500m, Ethiopian middle distance star Deresse Mekonnen, 22, the reigning two-time World Indoor champion and 2009 World Outdoor Championships silver medalist, will once again compete against previously announced American distance star Bernard Lagat. The two raced over 1500m in Birmingham in February, and Mekonnen notched the eighth-fastest time in history (3:33.10), making him the fifth-fastest performer of all time.

Javier Culson, from Puerto Rico, will clash against American Olympic bronze medalist Bershawn Jackson in the men’s 400m hurdles. Culson, 25, is on fire after running a world leading and national record time of 47.72 at the Ponce Grand Prix on May 8. Jackson, 27, of Champaign, Ill., owns the third-fastest time in the world this year (48.36). Both finished on the podium at the 2009 World Championships, with Culson claiming the silver medal and Jackson earning bronze. Jackson was the 2005 World champion in this event.

Brimin Kipruto and Paul Kipsiele Koech, both Kenyan Olympic medalists, will renew their rivalry in the 3000m steeplechase. Kipruto, 24, won Olympic gold in 2008 and the World title in 2007. Koech, 28, was the 2004 Olympic bronze medalist and was ranked No. 1 in the world from 2007-08. He was the 2008 Reebok Grand Prix champion in this event, winning in 8:01.85, the fastest time ever on U.S. soil.

In the men’s triple jump, recent World Indoor champion Teddy Tamgho of France will compete against two-time U.S. Olympian Walter Davis. Tamgho, 20, set a new world indoor record of 17.90m in winning his first World title in Doha in March. Davis, 30, of Baton Rouge, La., was the 2005 World champion and 2006 World Indoor champion in this event.

South Africa’s Mbulaeni Mulaudzi, 29, is the top entrant in the men’s 800m. He is the reigning 2009 World champion and 2004 Olympic silver medalist at 800m.

The women’s 1500m is stacked from top-to-bottom with all three medalists from the 2009 World Championships—reigning champion Maryam Yusuf Jamal of Bahrain, silver medalist Lisa Dobriskey of Great Britain and bronze medalist Shannon Rowbury of the United States—in addition to 2008 World Indoor champion Gelete Burka of Ethiopia and American Olympic finalist Anna Pierce (née Willard). Jamal, 25, set the Asian indoor record in the mile at Birmingham in February and had the fastest time in the world last year over 1500m (3:56.55). Dobriskey, 26, was the 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medalist at 1500m. Rowbury, 25, of San Francisco, finished seventh in the 1500m at the 2008 Olympic Games, the best finish ever by an American woman. Burka, 24, was the bronze medalist at the 2010 World Indoor Championships. Pierce, 26, of Mammoth Lakes, Calif., was the fastest American at 1500m in 2009 and was ranked No. 2 in the world at 800m.

The women’s 100m hurdles is packed with talent, as 2008 Olympic champion Dawn Harper will line up against Sweden’s Susanna Kallur and previously announced American Lolo Jones and Jamaican Delloreen Ennis-London. Harper, 26, of Los Angeles, Calif., won Olympic gold when Jones, the top-ranked American in 2008, tripped on the ninth hurdle in the Olympic final. Kallur, 29, was the 2006 European champion and is the current world record holder at 60m hurdles indoors.

The women’s field events will be a championship affair, with Vili, the Olympic and World champion, headlining the shot put; and American Chelsea Johnson taking on previously announced Jenn Suhr (née Stuczynski) in the pole vault. Vili, 25, dominated the international scene as the No. 1-ranked shot putter from 2007-09 and is a three-time World champion. Johnson, 26, of Atascadero, Calif., was the 2009 World Championship silver medalist.

Media interested in covering the event can access the accreditation application at www.adidasgrandprix.com. The deadline for applying is Friday, June 4. Updates, photos, and additional information can found at the adidas Grand Prix pages on Facebook and Twitter.

Ten National and State Champions Names to Jim Ryun High School Dream Mile

An all-star list of the country’s top prep distance stars have been confirmed for the inaugural Jim Ryun High School Dream Mile for boys and girls at the adidas Grand Prix on Saturday, June 12, organizers announced Thursday. Included in the list are 10 national or state champions in either track or cross-country. The races are named in honor of Ryun, the first high school runner to ever break four minutes in the mile.

“These kids are already stars at their own high schools, but now they have the chance to race against the country’s top competitors on the same stage as today’s track and field superstars,” Ryun said. “We’ll hopefully see if this race can help determine ‘who’s next’ among this new generation of distance athletes.”

Boys confirmed for the event include:

  • Lukas Verzbicas, a sophomore from Orland Park, Ill., dominated in 2009 as the Foot Locker Cross Country champion and as the Nike Indoor Nationals Champion at two miles and 5000 meters. He is the current national high school record holder at 5000m indoors.

OMEGA to Serve as Official Timekeeper for IAAF Diamond League

SWITZERLAND (May 4, 2010) – OMEGA, widely known for its role as the Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games, today announced it has signed an agreement to serve as the Official Timekeeper of the new IAAF Diamond League circuit in its 2010 inaugural season.

The IAAF Diamond League is an annual series of meets which intends, as one of its main goals, to enhance the worldwide appeal of athletics. The 14 meetings planned for 2010 replace the Golden League, whose six meetings were contested exclusively in Europe. The IAAF Diamond League will still include the most prestigious events on the European athletics calendar but will also feature meetings in China and the United States. The 2010 IAAF Diamond League season will officially begin in Doha, Qatar on May 14th.

The 2010 Diamond League makes its first stop in the U.S. (and fifth stop overall) with the adidas Grand Prix, the nation’s premier outdoor track & field invitational, at Ichan Stadium on Randall’s Island in New York City on June 12th. On July 3rd, the Diamond League will meet in Eugene, OR, for the Prefontaine Classic.

U.S. sprint star Tyson Gay, an OMEGA Ambassador since 2008, has also been named a Diamond League Ambassador and has been confirmed to compete in Eugene, Monaco, London and Brussels so far. Gay is the American Record holder in the 100m and a three-time World Champion. He won the 200m title in New York last year with a blistering time of 19.58.

Ato Boldon Discusses The Bolt Effect For "The Inside Track" Guest Columnist Series

ATO BOLDON DISCUSSES THE BOLT EFFECT FOR “THE INSIDE TRACK” GUEST COLUMNIST SERIES

Boldon tells how Usain Bolt has changed the sport,
predicts how low his times can go

NEW YORK (May 4, 2010) — Four-time Olympic medalist and current broadcast analyst Ato Boldon takes on one of the most talked about global sports figures for today’s “The Inside Track” guest column: Usain Bolt. Boldon discusses the impact his fellow Caribbean sprinter has had on the sport and what it’s meant to see Bolt rise to the top. “The Inside Track” is a six-part guest columnist series that will serve as a prelude to the adidas Grand Prix on Saturday, June 12, at Icahn Stadium in New York City.

Boldon, who will serve as the sprint broadcast analyst for NBC’s live coverage of the adidas Grand Prix, points to Bolt’s carefree approach to racing as one of the keys to his success: “Post-race posing is something track fans have been used to for years. Bolt has introduced the world to pre-race posturing, and yet, somehow has not alienated or irritated track and field fans or all of his competitors.”

He cites Bolt’s attitude—in addition to the fact that his rise to greatness can be traced throughout his youth—as evidence for why Bolt’s performances should not be looked at through “dirty-urine-tinted glasses:” “In my days as an athlete, I competed against most of the sprinters who turned up guilty of doping in the last decade. All had one thing in common: a seeming lack of real joy in competing. Bolt is the exact opposite.”

Curious to know how fast the experts think Bolt will go? Boldon gives his predictions.

To view the complete text, visit www.adidasgrandprix.com. Or to join in the discussion about this and other athletics topics, visit the adidas Grand Prix pages on Facebook and Twitter.

In addition to Boldon, other guest columnists include: Steve Holman, American Olympian and a former 3:50 miler; Dick Patrick, former USA Today athletics beat writer; Mary Wittenberg, New York Road Runners president and CEO; Jocelyn Robiot, Vice President Global Sports Marketing for adidas International; and Sebastian Coe, four-time British Olympic medalist and current chairman of the London Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games.

The adidas Grand Prix, in its sixth year, is the nation’s premier outdoor track & field invitational meet. It features Olympic stars, the Jim Ryun Dream Mile for top high school athletes and the Mayor’s Cup Fastest Kid competition for youth in the tri-state area. Increased and upgraded backstretch seating at track level is being added to accommodate the growing demand and interest from fans in the New York area. World Champions Steve Hooker, Lolo Jones added to star-studded lineup at adidas Grand Prix

WORLD CHAMPIONS STEVE HOOKER, LOLO JONES ADDED TO STAR-STUDDED LINEUP AT ADIDAS GRAND PRIX

Olympic medalist Jenn Suhr to headline women’s pole vault at June 12 Diamond League meeting

NEW YORK (April 15, 2010) — Olympic and World champion pole vaulter Steve Hooker of Australia and Olympic hurdler Lolo Jones of the United States will compete in a star-studded lineup at the adidas Grand Prix on Saturday, June 12, organizers announced Thursday. The adidas Grand Prix, held at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island, will be the fifth stop on the inaugural 14-meet, international Diamond League circuit. Hooker is one of the original nine IAAF Diamond League Ambassadors.

Hooker and Jones, both recent World Indoor champions, will be joined by American Olympic silver medalist Jenn Suhr (née Stuczynski), who will headline the women’s pole vault. Also in the field are previously announced Olympians Usain Bolt of Jamaica and Americans Bernard Lagat and Hyleas Fountain and World champion Jessica Ennis of Great Britain

This is Hooker’s first meet back in New York since he attempted the indoor world record height of 6.15 meters (20 feet, 2 inches) at the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden in January 2009.

“New York City was good to me at the Millrose Games last year, so I am hoping for big jumps in my Diamond League return to the Big Apple,” Hooker said.

Hooker, 28, continued his recent success at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in March, clearing a championship record of 6.01m (19 feet, 8 1/2 inches) to notch his first World Indoor title. Since turning professional in 2006, he has dominated the pole vault scene and is the only man to win Olympic gold, World Indoor and Outdoor titles, and gold at the Commonwealth Games in a single event.

Jones, 27, of Baton Rouge, La., had a breakthrough performance in Doha, becoming the first woman to win back-to-back World Indoor titles in the 60-meter hurdles and breaking the American record set by Gail Devers in 2003. She is a three-time USA Indoor champion, claiming titles in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Jones was also the U.S. Olympic Trials champion in the 100m hurdles in 2008.

Suhr, 28, of Churchville, N.Y., is both the indoor and outdoor American record-holder in the pole vault, making her the No. 2-ranked jumper in history behind world record-holder Yelena Isinbayeva. Suhr was the Olympic silver medalist in 2008 and has won seven U.S. national titles. She married long-time coach Rick Suhr in January 2010.

Usain Bolt Storming into New York on June 12

USAIN BOLT STORMING INTO NEW YORK ON JUNE 12
Ticket options available now. Tickets available for sale February 15th

NEW YORK, N.Y. (February 2) – Sprint sensation Usain Bolt will compete in the 100 meters at the adidas Grand Prix in New York City on June 12th, organizers announced today. The adidas Grand Prix, formerly known as the Reebok Grand Prix, will be the fifth stop on the inaugural IAAF Diamond League circuit and will be held at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island.

Usain Bolt, the reigning triple-Olympic Champion (100m, 200m and 4x100m) and triple-World Champion, is one of the most popular and sought after sports personalities in the world. A showman both on and off the track, Bolt shocked the world in Beijing in 2008, not just by winning the 100m gold medal but by doing so in a never-before-seen dominating and entertaining world record effort. He followed up this victory just days later with another historic world record at 200m (19.30) and again in the 4x100m Relay (37.10).

In 2009, Bolt outperformed the world as well as his own seemingly untouchable world best marks with two more records (9.58 for 100m and 19.19 for 200m) at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin. Ranked #1 in the world at 100m and 200m in 2008 and 2009, Bolt was also named Athlete-of-the Year by the IAAF in both years.

The adidas Grand Prix will be Bolt’s first competition in the United States since he set his first world record at this event in 2008. “New York was the site of my first world record, the track is lightning fast and the fans, well, they sat through an entire thunderstorm in 2008 just to watch the 100m so I know they appreciate speed,” said Bolt. “I am looking forward to returning to the Big Apple in June.”

Organizers also announced today an agreement with OptionIt, a leader in the next generation of ticket buying for sports and entertainment events. Despite the addition of more spectator seating in 2010, organizers expect demand to outstrip supply. Beginning today, fans can purchase an option, through OptionIt.com, for an adidas Grand Prix ticket. Concerned about resellers and scalping, organizers believe this alliance with OptionIt will allow fans who are likely to purchase tickets to buy an option to hold those seats until an assigned date, when they can then exercise their option and purchase their reserved ticket at face value.

OptionIt currently has similar agreements with organizations such as the Boston Celtics, Baltimore Ravens and Washington Capitals and the San Jose Sharks.

The adidas Grand Prix, in its sixth year, is the nation’s premier outdoor track & field invitational meet. It features Olympic stars, top high school athletes and a “Fastest Kid in New York competition.” Increased and upgraded backstretch seating at track level is being added to accommodate the growing demand and interest from fans in the New York area. Options are available immediately with tickets available for sale beginning on February 15th. Visit www.adidasgrandprix.com or call 1-877-TIX-TRAC for more information. Additional ferry service and special event buses will be made available to ensure all fans the most convenient access to Icahn Stadium. Updates, photos and additional transportation information can be found by visiting the adidas Grand Prix pages on Facebook and Twitter.

About OptionIt
OptionIt’s patented, user-friendly technology allows fans to reserve access to future events without the obligation to purchase tickets. The OptionIt platform reinforces the simple belief that convenience is about reserving now and deciding later. OptionIt’s official partnerships with sports teams, leagues, and event owners (“rights holders”) guarantee ticket inventory and empower fans by creating a flexible, personalized solution to purchase what they want, when they want it. In some cases, this may be before the physical printed ticket exists. For more information, visit optionit.com.

Organizers announce depth in hurdles and medals in Boston

BOSTON (January 25) – Ryan Brathwaite of Barbados, the reigning World Outdoor 110m hurdles champion, leads an all-star list of international hurdlers scheduled to compete at the 2010 Reebok Boston Indoor Games on Feb. 6, organizers announced today. He was named an ambassador to this island nation and now carries the title of His Excellency Ambassador Ryan Brathwaite.

Ladji Docouré of France, the 2005 World Champion in the 110m hurdles, is also a two-time European Indoor champion in the 60m hurdles. American Aries Merritt, a former NCAA and World Junior champion is also in the race.

In the Women's 60m hurdles, former World Champion Perdita Felicien from Canada leads the field. Felicien has World Indoor (2004) and World Outdoor (2003) titles to her name. She will be challenged by former NCAA Champion Virginia Powell, from the US.

Athletes who have already been confirmed for the 2010 Reebok Boston Indoor Games competed this weekend in New York's Armory.
