adidas Grand Prix 2012

News and Notes, Volume 5

Gold mettle
David Rudisha says he wants to make Sebastian Coe proud at the 2012 London Games. More than that, he wants to honor Coe and Wilson Kipketer—his two inspirations—by winning the Olympic 800-meter gold medal those two World Record-setting legends never got. But beforehand, Rudisha will compete in the U.S., for the first time ever, at the adidas Grand Prix on June 9, and this Friday he hits the track in Ostrava. (Live results will be here.)

Oscar winner
Oscar Pistorius will be in Ostrava, too, looking for a time fast enough to get him named by South Africa to its squad for the 2012 Olympics, although there seems to be some mystery about exactly what that time is. Read about it here. Regardless, by the time the Paralympic superstar gets to New York fans will have the privilege of cheering for someone who is either trying to make history, or has just made it. Not a bad deal. The “Blade Runner” warmed up earlier this week at the BT Paralympic World Cup by winning the 200 meters, where he told a TV interviewer that he's hoping to get under 46 seconds on Friday night.

Dream team
Levonte “Kermit” Whitfield will be in action at the Golden South Classic in Orlando, Fla., on Saturday, and Marvin Bracy might be, too—but against the professionals, in hopes of attaining an Olympic Trials qualifying time. As fast as Bracy is, he's been bedeviled by winds during the qualifying period, and needs a wind-legal time 10.18 or faster to meet the automatic “A” standard. Nickel Ashmeade of Jamaica and Travis Padgett of the U.S. are among those scheduled to compete. Keep an eye on the meet's home page for results; the elite men's 100 meters is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. Whitfield and Bracy are both in the lineup for the adidas Dream 100.

Town pride
To you, Tirunesh Dibaba is one of the greatest female distance runners in history. To a youngster in Dibaba's hometown of Bekoji, in Ethiopia, Dibaba is hope. Get a glimpse of what Dibaba's 2008 double Olympic gold meant back home in the trailer to a new documentary, “Town of Runners.” We then dare you to watch Dibaba run the 5000 meters in New York and not think of the town that idolizes her.

Home cooking
When Robby Andrews faces World Record-holder David Rudisha at 800 meters, he'll have a lot of support: Andrews grew up in New Jersey and ran for Manalapan High School, just over an hour from Icahn Stadium. “Having so many friends and family able to make the meet, it's definitely going to be a home field advantage for me,” he told Race Results Weekly. The adidas Grand Prix will be Andrews's first major competition in the N.Y.-N.J. area since turning pro earlier this year.
